Dear Clusterflock…
Best Stevie Wonder song.
beer is down
The predominance of beer as Americans’ favorite drink has waned over the past two decades, but that decline was punctuated this year with a five-point drop in mentions of beer, from 41% to 36%. This was driven largely by a 12-point decline among younger adults. Beer’s loss corresponds with slight gains in preferences for wine and liquor, both of which consequently register near their two-decade highs in 2011.
I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Today’s lunchtime conversation
Daryl: Here, taste this.
Cindy: No.
D: Really, taste it. It tastes like zero. It tastes like chew.
C: Well, if you put it that way. [Prodigious chewing.] Wow. It tastes like chew, but there’s a lovely coconut aftertaste. Here, taste it again.
D: [Prodigious chewing.] You’re a liar.
C: God damn it, it tastes like coconut at the end.
D: You’re tasting the word Coconut.
C: I almost never taste words. Take this little bit.
D: [Prodigious chewing.] Nope.
C: You’re missing the coconut stripe on your tongue. You are deformed.
D: Am not.
C: Are too.
D: You gonna eat the rest of that?

I can’t decide if Shia LaBeouf is attractive.
Super 8
I’ve been asking in various places about recommendations for movies that are highly entertaining and well crafted, like the first two Ocean’s movies and the Bourne movies. Last night we saw Super 8, and it fits this genre perfectly. It’s like one of the good Spielberg movies from my childood, set in the era of my childhood. I’m sure that was part of J.J. Abrams’ intention. Anyway, what are movies you’ve seen that fit this description? (The second link will show you what has been suggested so far.)
The sporadic campaigns of “Girl Power” aren’t really getting the job done
Feminist vlogger NineteenPercent posted this response to Beyonce’s “Run The World” video, challenging some of the singer’s overly positive views on women’s empowerment:

Why You Should Watch Filth
I know I’m like a cheerleader for John Waters here on clusterflock, but I really do love the man and I love the way his mind works and what he says. This is one of a series.
I always wanted a brother, and I wish John Waters had been my big brother.
(Thanks to Juanito for tipping me to this.)

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace
I’ve been wanting to watch Adam Curtis’s All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, but fifteen minutes in I realized I completely disagree with his premise. To put it more bluntly, I think he’s wrong. Sometimes I can adapt that into my experience, and make it part of the narrative, like when I read an interview sometimes or a chunk of non-fiction, and think of it as a novel. So far, though, I haven’t been able to do that with All Watched Over. Am I wrong?
Update: Here’s Episode One on YouTube.

It was fucking retarded! Sooo slow, I thought I would really fall asleep in there. How stoned should one be to like this movie?
I was one of the people who laughed at it when the “screensaver” part began. And I’m telling ya, if my mom wasn’t there, I would have scream smth at a screen as well.
Ow, and btw, I was at a cinema in Moscow, Russia and all the audience was silently staring at the screen all-movie long. Weird, huh? I thought, they were the sheep.
Mike Lee on Victimhood
This is not going to be a good essay. This is going to be a terrible essay, which you should not read, for two reasons.
It deserves to be read anyway.

a thought in process
The celebration of Osama bin Laden’s death is not what’s offensive; the death of a man so clearly evil ought to bring emotional relief. The offense is how much of the celebration expressed just how few people have any substantive sense or scope of what happened on September 11, 2001. Schlock begets stupidity.
quote out of context
ANYWAYS: An Antarctic Mystery, as far as I can tell, is based on the idea that The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is, in fact, completely true, and these later adventurers are going to follow up on his report. I am certain that I am failing to communicate how completely awesome this is, that Jules Verne is in some meta, wonderful way based an entire novel on the premise that the framing of yet another foundational adventure novel is in fact not a framing but a true thing. And he spends SIXTY PAGES setting this up.

I had a powerful Republican moment watching those clips. I couldn’t help but think of Guiliani’s infamous radio rant about ferret owners….
From the transcript:
There is something really, really, very sad about you. You need help. You need somebody to help you. I know you feel insulted by that, but I’m being honest with you. This excessive concern with little weasels is a sickness.
