Why I Love Tyler Cowen

On the specifics: relative to most libertarian economists, I am more likely to think -- or should I say admit -- that human beings are irrational, even when the stakes are high (see the self-deception chapter in Discover Your Inner Economist). But, relative to social democrats, I tend to think that politicians are irrational actors trying to pander to irrational voters and that it can't be any other way. I am much less optimistic about democracy as an instrument for fine-tuning good policy or for that matter as a medium for enforcing progressive sentiments. On health care I don't think the solution is to strip away insurance, a'la HSAs, so I agree with Ezra's paragraph more than not. On The Wire, the defect is fully mine. I've watched seven or eight episodes, from seasons one and three, and I thought: this is fantastic. But I never really looked forward to the next episode and eventually I stopped watching. I have an inability to appreciate all things gritty, regardless of medium. I don't enjoy Grapes of Wrath either, or for that matter Goodfellas. I wonder if needing a tinge of romanticism isn't some kind of character weakness of mine.

I Stand Accused . . . of an addled memory

I declined all potential offers to act as rhythm guitarist, then put in a bid for bass, citing my admiration for The Duchess (of Bo Diddley fame). Then I got to thinking, hauled out a videotape of The TAMI Show, and took a look at Bo and The Duchess.

The Duchess did not play bass. But didn't she look fine?

The Death of High Fidelity : Rolling Stone

In 2004, Jeff Buckley's mom, Mary Guibert, listened to the original three-quarter-inch tape of her son's recordings as she was preparing the tenth-anniversary reissue of Grace. "We were hearing instruments you've never heard on that album, like finger cymbals and the sound of viola strings being plucked," she remembers. "It blew me away because it was exactly what he heard in the studio."

To Guibert's disappointment, the remastered 2004 version failed to capture these details. So last year, when Guibert assembled the best-of collection So Real: Songs From Jeff Buckley, she insisted on an independent A&R consultant to oversee the reissue process and a mastering engineer who would reproduce the sound Buckley made in the studio. "You can hear the distinct instruments and the sound of the room," she says of the new release. "Compression smudges things together."
