Reactions to the First iPod Announcement in 2001

Apple fans were not kind to Steve Jobs’ new digital product.

“iPoop… iCry. I was so hoping for something more.” –elitemacor

“Sounds very revolutionary to me. hey – heres an idea Apple – rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up? or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm? ” –Pants

“I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently! Why oh why would they do this?! It’s so wrong! It’s so stupid!” –WeezerX80

Hindsight is a bitch.

BlackBerry to iPhone 3G: Is Now The Time To Pull the Trigger?

For anyone out there who is considering moving to the iPhone 3G from a BlackBerry (as I am), I have posted a lengthy consideration of making such a jump over at my employer’s blog.  If you are considering such a move or have done it in the past, I SO would like your comments.

Check it out here.

On Apple

Adam Lisagor discusses some interesting theories regarding the new MobleMe networks:

With the MobileMe unveiling (and that of its complementary domain me.com), it’s looking like a shift is afoot for Apple—a shift that may be every bit as significant as the shift from PowerPC to the Intel processor, but a shift in ideology whose signs may be found in the simple grammatical switch from subject (I) to object (me).

After Every Apple Keynote, We Get This

I know Apple memes go viral incredibly quickly and all, but can we just have one major Apple event without everyone speculating that Steve Jobs is sick?

In 2006 the same thing was speculated, and not just by one source. There were a few murmurs of it in 2007, and this year it’s back with a vengeance.

I know that tens of billions of market cap dollars rest on Steve’s position at the helm of Apple, but perhaps Steve has changed his diet? He seems, given what we all know about his lifestyle at a meta level, to be the sort of guy who would investigate a CR-based diet to extend his health and longevity. Or perhaps we’ve all forgotten what a lean person looks like. And let’s not forget the man is in his mid-50s, and there’s this thing called natural aging. Has anyone heard of it?

I know I’m adding to the meme with this very post, but to me, Steve didn’t look unhealthy, just thin.

iPhone 3G: The Siren Song

I have resisted the iPhone for a solid year now, instead sticking with my BlackBerry 8130 on Verizon. But increasingly the BB isn’t doing it for me, and I find myself lusting after iPhones even more than when they launched. I told myself some time ago that I would wait until iPhone v2 arrives, and assuming it has 3G capability, I would take the plunge then.

Tomorrow at WWDC might be the tipping point for me. If the new model amazes — and I think it will, but not NEARLY as much as the 3rd-party software demos will — I will buy one and make the move to AT&T.

I found some purported (‘leaked’) images of the 3G iPhone over on Engadget, but I have my doubts as to whether or not these are real. In fact, I agree with John Gruber: before WWDC, all ‘leaked’ info should be assumed false, as leaked Apple images/news are amazingly viral before any headline Apple event.

If you are an iPhone user, what are your impressions of the device (and network) after owning one for some time? Any insight into the whole iPhone vs. BlackBerry debate?

HBO on iTunes

Looks like Apple and HBO are close to a deal to distribute HBO content on iTunes.

Old Mac Video Games I Love

effective branding in 30 milliseconds

Exposing people to a brand’s logo for 30 milliseconds will make them behave in ways associated with that brand.

technology help

I’m going to be doing some internet consulting soon and will be working ‘virtually’. The team I will be working with uses web cams to do a lot of their communication. I’m on a Mac and most of the team are on Macs. We’ll be using iChat to communicate. I like the Apple iSight but it’s pretty expensive. Does anyone know good alternatives? (That are fucking beautiful.)

apple, ipods, dvr

Apple filed a patent that shows a lot of research has gone into an Apple DVR:

Of most interest is that Apple appears to be looking into ways to integrate their iPod or iPhone into this experience. They describe and picture an iPod-like device that would dock to the DVR. Customers could then sync their recorded television content with their iPod and also select future shows to also be recorded from the portable device. Once syncing takes place the future shows are added to the DVR’s recording queue and new shows are transfered to the iPod.

more multitouch

- Need to move a cursor across the screen? Just slide your finger and it goes.
- Want to enter text? Just start typing and the text is there. You even get the touch feedback as if really pressing the keys.
- Need to erase some text? Use the backspace or just slide the finger backwards
- Have to write or draw something? Just pretend you hold a stylus or pen in your hand and start writing/drawing.
- If that is still not good enough, pick up the real stylus and start writing with it.
- All these cool touch gestures that Apple has implemented in iPhone and is exploring further? You know, scrolling, zooming, rotating & moving objects, etc; They are here too
- 3D object manipulation? Select a few 3D objects on the screen and use all 5 fingers on both hands to play with them.
- Want to take a break to relax and afraid to put your hands on the touch surface? Don’t worry Multi-touch 2.0 thingie knows that and does not pay attention to your resting palms or fingers
