Benefits of Bamboo Bikes?

While I think this is an interesting idea in theory, I'm not sure about the practicality of it.

http://bamboobike.org/

Would they be cheaper and easier to build? And even if they are eco-friendly (which I would question), are they missing the important need which is providing cheap, reliable transportation that can be sustained (fixed by people on the ground in countries where they are used).

Gimicky attraction or destraction?

Perepiteia

"It's generally always the same reaction," says Heins. "There's a bit of a scramble on the part of the observer to put what they're seeing into some sort of context with what they know. They can't explain it. They don't know what it is."

He'd be happy if somebody did, even if the news was bad. His wife has kicked him out. He doesn't earn an income. He can't pay child support. The certainty would be welcome. "I've tried to quit many times, and thought if I could just be a normal guy I would have a normal life ... But I had this idea and I believe it works."

Upgradable Leicas

Leica's M8 digital rangefinder camera will set you back about $5,500, but thanks to the modular design won't be obsolete when the new 35-mm, 50-megapixel sensors come out in a couple of years. Leica has pledged to offer camera upgrades (something no other manufacturer offers) in perpetuity. They say they can upgrade everything from the sensor to the LCD to the shutter system.

700 MHz Spectrum Auction Starts Tomorrow

Tomorrow, the FCC is starting the auction for the 700 MHz Spectrum, which will be freed on February 17, 2009 once TV broadcasting goes digital.

The New York Times has a good article on the topic.

"In setting the rules for the auction to some of the most valuable radio spectrum licenses ever issued, the F.C.C. decided last year to endorse one of Google’s proposals by requiring that the winning bidders open their networks to a wider array of applications and phones. (Verizon and AT&T objected to the decision.)"

While you will not be able to know who's bidding what, you will be able to watch the bids with daily updates from the FCC's auction site. (Pick auction 73 from the drop-down menu).

Black Black

U.S. researchers said on Tuesday they have made the darkest material on Earth, a substance so black it absorbs more than 99.9 percent of light.

Made from tiny tubes of carbon standing on end, this material is almost 30 times darker than a carbon substance used by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology as the current benchmark of blackness.

Jobs on Kindle, Discuss

"It doesn't matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore," he said. "Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore."
